About Phenotyping Core

The objective of the University of Arizona Phenotyping Core (UAPC) is to provide resources to investigate phenotypes of genetically altered mice and small animal models of disease. The UAPC offers investigators full service support of in vivo cardiovascular and physiology studies in normal and diseased states through surgical models, imaging techniques, and functional physiological assessments. In order to offer the most thorough analysis of mouse physiology, we utilize state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, including:

  • Microsurgical operating room
  • Visualsonics Vevo 2100 echocardiography system
  • Scisense pressure-volume admittance catheters for cardiac catheterization and pressure-volume analysis
  • Automated treadmill system, voluntary running cages, and swimming chambers for exercise studies
  • Modalities for assessment of disease states including ischemia/reperfusion injury, myocardial infarction, volume overload, and pressure overload
  • Whole body Plethysmography for respiration studies
  • Mouse muscle test system to study muscle function and mechanics in situ, ex vivo, or in vitro
  • DSI blood pressure and biopotential telemetry system (avaible April)
  • Tail cuff blood pressure analysis system (available soon)

Physiological parameters, particularly cardiovascular parameters, in mice can be greatly influenced by differences in strain, sex, stress state, and manner of handling, which can lead to a high degree of variability in data acquisition. In addition, surgical models of disease in small animals and methods of evaluating physiological parameters are technically challenging. Relying on the experience and expertise of a core facility offers the best opportunity for obtaining consistent and quality physiologic data. The UAPC serves to fill this important role at the University of Arizona by providing investigators access to state-of-the-art equipment, high-end facilities, and an experienced staff. Furthermore, as a core service and facility resource the availability of the UAPC can be utilized to strengthen grant applications.
