Cardiovascular stress in response to exercise challenge is commonly employed to detect cardiac abnormalities that are readily apparent at resting states. The MPC operates dedicated mouse exercise equipment including:
- automated treadmills
- voluntary running wheel cages
- swimming chamber
Treadmill
The treadmill consists of 6 individual running lanes for mice, with each lane equipped with an electric shock stimulus to motivate running. The treadmill is fully automated with adjustable speed and inclination. The treadmill is available for both short- and long-term studies. A technician provides constant monitoring and collects data during the study or the investigator may request personnel training for use of the treadmill without a technician.
Voluntary Running Wheel Cages
Voluntary running wheel cages contain a free-running wheel equipped with a counter and auto-sampling capabilities. A total of 48 voluntary running cages are available. A technician is not required for use of running wheel cages; however, normal UAC per diem housing fees apply.
Swimming Chamber
Swimming chambers are temperature controlled with an adjustable current to stimulate the desire to swim. A total of 6 swimming chambers are available. Each swimming chamber is large enough to accomidate a maximum of 10-15 mice at a time. A technician provides constant monitoring and collects data during the study or the investigator may request personnel training for use of the swimming chambers without a technician.
